I'm a dissident. I don't like gopher.
RFC 1436 is a weak protocol. Item number types are useless, obsolete
(2, 4, 5), incomplete (i, h are not standard) and confusing (what
about pdf?). The structure of a gophermap is so weird that several
servers are using gph files instead. Some people are expanding gopher
the wrong way. They use ugly tags for metadata and they stop writing
txt files because they realize they need hyperlinks everywhere. This
is insane.
IMHO gopher is just ftp with a fancy index. I agree the web sucks with
its banners, cookies, DPGR and javascript. However, gopher fixes these
annoyances with an inferior solution. The real deal is making the web
simple and uncluttered.
html must be used carefully. We just need a <pre> tag at the top and
<a> tags in the footer. If we don't use inline a tags, we don't even
need to close them. Forget the <!DOCTYPE
html><html><head><title></title></head><body> and all the closing
tags. Resulting html is not valid but it should work in any browser.
You may not like it but I prefer it over gopher. We can keep all the
bells and whistles of a multiplexed http2, tls1.3 encryption and
compatibility with upcoming protocols.
